Hair Regimen 101

Hair Regimen Basics

Here is a list of the basic essentials of a good regimen, the types of products and frequency of use will vary based on your hair type (natural, relaxed, coloured e.t.c.). I find this list can help some of us that tend to over indulge when we start something new. By following this guide you can prevent yourself from becoming a product junkie, I mean notice how it says 1 right? Yes in the beginning I suggest you acquire 1 of each product until you find it is not working for you or till you can calmly make a pocket-wise decision to buy more. Also if something works for you keep it and remember the 80-20 rule  (you know the one that says "if it aint broke, don't fix it"), That being said you can be a bit adventurous ever so often, anyhoo here is the list.....

Items

Cleansing

It is important to keep your hair and scalp clean for obvious hygiene reasons and also because if there is a lot of buildup from product use you may find that your products aren't as effective as they used to be.  For this purpose you need the following.

1 Clarifying Shampoo; e.g. Organic Root Stimulator Creamy Aloe Shampoo

Mainly used to remove build up and it usually just gives your hair a fresh start for the next round of product use. Used 1ce a month

1 Moisturizing Shampoo;  Organix Argan Oil Shampoo

Mild sulphate-free shampoo that can be used more frequently, cleans hair and scalp without stripping oils

1 Conditioner; Vo5 Give me Moisture Conditioner

A moisture based conditioner can be used in lieu of your moisturising shampoo,  and for when you want to wash your hair more frequently than 1ce a week. It still serves the purpose of a conditioner of course (adding moisture)

Oils

Used mainly as a daily sealant but can be added to your deep conditioner for added moisture

1 Natural Oil: Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

Use this daily after you moisturise your hair

Thirst Quenchers

These would be your different water based products, anything that adds moisture to your hair. Your conditioner also falls under this category

1 Moisturizing Deep Conditioner;  Motions Moisture Plus Conditioner

Adds moisture back to your hair and really helps retain length, use 1ce a week, can be done before after you wash hair

1 Moisture based Leave-in Conditioner: Herbal Essences Long term relationship/Beautiful ends

Used after all "rinsables" have been rinsed out when hair is damp but not dripping

1 Moisturizer: Olive Oil hair lotion

Can be used daily to keep her from drying, like how you might apply lotion daily

Strenghteners

The different type of protein based products that help to strengthen hair shaft and prevent excess breakage. Protein is tricky because it is hard to come back from a protein overload and the results of excess protein can lead to more breakage.

1 Protein Deep Conditioner: Aphogee 2step treatment

I personally use this about 1ce every 6 weeks or when my hair feels weak

1 Protein based Leave-in Conditioner (optional): Cantu Shea Butter

Similar to your moisture based leave in.
